Montenegro Adopts Updated NDC Targeting 55% Emission Reduction by 2030

The Government of Montenegro adopted the updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) at a session held in Podgorica. This strategic document represents Montenegro's key commitment under the Paris Agreement and the EU accession process.

The new NDC sets ambitious targets: a 55 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and 60 percent by 2035 compared to the 1990 baseline. This is a significant increase in ambition compared to the previous NDC which targeted a 35 percent reduction.

Minister of Ecology Damjan Ćulafić stated that Montenegro is taking concrete commitments and that this document is the result of months of expert work, with UNDP support and alignment with EU climate legislation requirements.

Priority sectors for emission reductions include energy, transport, industry and waste management, with special emphasis on accelerating the transition to renewable energy sources and increasing energy efficiency.
